Racial Discrimination
The ethnic group I am writing about is specifically African American people. Racial discrimination has been an issue deeply rooted in the history of the United States of America. It may be a sensitive topic to address, but the history of slavey and its prominence in the US has led to the sole cause of the systemic racism embedded in the world today. Specifically I want to address the lack of access that African American have to quality healthcare and health in general. It is an issue worthy discussing about because of how commonly it is addressed, yet little positive outcome it has attracted.
Black people have been been known to reside in poorer, less accessible, more dangerous neighborhoods -- which in turn is correlated to the worse access of education, jobs, food, and healthcare. These social determinants factors ultimately compound and all affect the mortality and morbidity rate in these environments.
Through research, I want to find specific data regarding black people and their life expectancies, typical health conditions, and policies that directly affect or contribute to these conditions. To oppose my argument, I have found articles describing the improved life expectancy with regard to black population throughout the 21st century; however, it gets contradicted by the mortality statistics during the COVID pandemic.

This is an excellent topic to research and write about. With the oppression and discrimination that this community has faced, there should be lots of information and sources to use for your paper. Perhaps you can refine your topic to be African Americans in Los Angeles or a specific group within this population.
ReplyDeleteI think this introduction to your essay brings greater awareness to the issue. While there is abundant research and social commentary on these issues there are still large disparities in healthcare effecting African Americans. These issues have has a history of being unsolved and there aren't enough provisions to address these disparities.
